Zoho Books vs VERP: an honest comparison

Zoho Books and VERP in one paragraph each

Zoho Books is online accounting software from Zoho. Its India pricing page lists a Free plan (for businesses with financial-year revenue up to ₹25 lakhs, 1 user plus 1 accountant) and paid plans from Standard to Ultimate, priced per organisation per month.

VERP is an ERP for growing businesses, built by D&D Technology in Jaipur. Inventory and warehouses, sales and quotations, purchase, GST billing, accounts, HR and attendance, CRM and leads, and reports run as one connected system with role-based access, an activity history, and web and mobile access. Every sale, purchase and payment updates stock, accounts and reports. You start with the modules you need and switch on more as the team is ready.

Quick verdict

Choose Zoho Books if

  • You want cloud accounting with a free plan while revenue is under ₹25 lakhs.
  • You already use other Zoho apps and want them connected.
  • Your main need is invoicing, bills, banking and GST, rather than stock and operations.

Choose VERP if

  • You buy, hold and sell stock across locations and want sales, stock, purchase and accounts to update each other.
  • Several staff need their own roles and mobile access, not one shared accounting login.
  • You want CRM, HR and attendance in the same system as billing.

Where each one is stronger

Zoho Books strengths

  • A free plan for small businesses under the ₹25 lakh revenue limit.
  • Clear published plans from ₹749 to ₹7,999 per organisation per month billed annually.
  • Cloud access from any browser.
  • Part of the wider Zoho suite.

VERP strengths

  • One connected flow: quotation to sales order, dispatch and invoice without retyping; PO to goods receipt and supplier bill.
  • Live stock by location with transfers, reorder levels and valuation.
  • Role-based permissions, activity history, web and mobile access.
  • Published plan: ₹499/month or ₹4,491/year after a 1-month free trial; custom scopes quoted by modules and users.

Things to check before choosing VERP

  • VERP is newer than Tally and Zoho; most CAs will still ask for data in the format they use, so plan the hand-off to your accountant.
  • Bigger rollouts are quoted by modules and number of users after a walkthrough.
  • If you only need books and GST returns, a pure accounting tool may be simpler.

Things to check before choosing Zoho Books

  • The free plan has limits: 1 user and 1 accountant, 1,000 invoices and 1,000 bills/expenses a year.
  • It is accounting-first; deeper stock, warehouse and HR workflows may need other Zoho apps or upgrades.
  • Prices exclude local taxes.

Who should choose which

Zoho Books is the better choice for a small business that mainly needs online accounting and GST invoicing, especially one under ₹25 lakh revenue that can use the free plan.

VERP is the better choice for a trader, distributor, retailer or small manufacturer whose problem is operations: stock across locations, orders, dispatch, purchase, outstanding and staff, all feeding the accounts. If the problem is only bookkeeping and GST filing, TallyPrime or Zoho Books are proven tools for that job.

How to decide in one week

  • Write down the three jobs the software must do every day, and the one report you need every week.
  • Shortlist two products at most, and ask each vendor for a demo on your own sample data, not a generic tour.
  • Ask each vendor, in writing, for the full yearly cost: plan, users, add-ons, payment or transaction fees, setup and support.
  • Check how you can export your data if you leave, and in which format.
  • Run one real week of work in the trial or demo account before you commit to a yearly plan.

Switching from Zoho Books to VERP

VERP rollouts are staged so the business keeps running: core sales, stock and billing first, then accounts, HR and the rest.

  1. Agree the opening date. Usually the start of a month or quarter; earlier records stay in your current software.
  2. Clean the masters. Products, customers, suppliers and opening stock are cleaned and imported.
  3. Configure. Locations, taxes, document numbering and user roles are set up for your business.
  4. Go live with the core. Start with sales, stock and billing; check one representative transaction end to end.
  5. Add accounts and HR. Switch on accounts, HR and other modules as the team is ready.
  6. Hand off to your CA. Agree the reports and format your accountant needs each month.

Export your data from your current tool before you cancel it, and keep that export for your records.
